The New Nigerian Money Scam

25Oct10

The following is a true story. The names have NOT been changed to protect the innocent or the guilty.

Alas, the Frugal Yankee is in the process of getting a divorce. Despite the efforts of maintaining and working on a 210 year old house, the male is the one who is supposed to leave in these situations, so much for sexual equality. But that is a different story.

So the process begins. The local newspapers are checked, the online classifieds are checked and , of course, Craigslist. In the course of the search, owners of dubiously behaved Katrina rescue dogs showed their one room basement ‘apartment’. A man professing a ‘natural’ life style and wondering if there might be objections if he walked around nude much of the time. And of course, the politically aware who wanted a breakdown of your current feelings about hit button items as part of the acceptance protocol. And then there was this.

It was on Craigslist.

Check out this 3 bedroom ranch in Milford! Hardwood floors, fireplace with insert, finished room in basement. Close to Rte 101, shopping, restaurants and easy commute to Mass. 2 car attached garage and the seller is in the process of completing a large metal “barn” type building in the back on a slab foundation that would be perfect for many uses or make offer as is and you finish it. Abuts conservation land to the back also!

At first blush this sends up all sorts of alarms. The price is too low. Is it a toxic site? Was someone murdered there? What’s wrong with this picture?

However, in the spirit of looking for a nice cheap place to lay my head, I responded to the ad.

This is want was sent back.

Greetings,
I must confess that I am new in this landlord business. However,My name is Alan Dean and My Wife’s name is Janet j Dean,I

own the house located at (xx xxxxxxx Road, Milford NH 03055 ) due to my job as a missionary I spent less time in the States so I

could not get a hold on any Realtor to handle this rent issue, although it was when I knew how long we are going to stay in Africa

that I decided to rent out the house. However, the initial plan was to sale out the House.which I tried, but sometimes the agents

inflates the prize and it takes longer to sell i am telling you this in case if you find the house on another website, that is the old advert. because of this reason and more we need a responsible person (With good credit) that can take very good care of it as we are not after the money , but want it to be clean and for you to take it as if it were yours.

Monthly Rent:$700
Security Deposit:$500
Total Amount:$1200
Bed & Bath:3Bedroom,1bath

Thanks for this post…had an exact experience on craigslist..other than the picture of the house, the wording was exactly the same. The scary part is that the scammers looked up the owners name and created an email account on yahoo with that name.
